Energy-efficient homes designed for Canterbury's climate.
Canterbury's climate — cold winters, hot summers, long sunshine hours — is perfectly suited to passive solar design. At VILA.nz, we've been designing homes that harness the sun's energy for over a decade, reducing heating costs by up to 40% compared to a standard NZ build.
Every passive solar home we design starts with site-specific analysis: orientation, glazing ratios, thermal mass placement, and shading. We use SIPs (Structurally Insulated Panels) for the building envelope, thermally broken window frames to eliminate cold bridging, and HRV systems to maintain air quality without losing heat.
The result: a home that stays warm in winter without an expensive heating bill, cool in summer without air conditioning, and costs less to run year-round.
Notable passive solar projects include the Hanmer Holiday Vila — an alpine passive retreat achieving Homestar8 — and Westmorland Vila, a north-facing family residence designed around solar gain with SIPs construction.
